WARSAW — A female was arrested after getting into a violent fight with her boyfriend at the Victory Hotel. He suffered a laceration to the leg and had to be transported to the hospital.

Jenna Rose Parks

Jenna Rose Parks, 32, 223 W. Jefferson St., Warsaw, is being charged with domestic battery with a deadly weapon, a level 5 felony.

On April 28, officers with the Warsaw Police Department responded to a fight at Victory Hotel, 223 W Jefferson St. Upon arrival, a female, later identified as Parks, was walking down an adjacent alley. Officers soon realized that Parks was a suspect in the fight complaint and talked with her.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, officers located a black pocket knife on Parks. According to a Kosciusko County CSI technician, the knife had a red blood stain on it.

The officers also located the other participant in the fight, Parks’ boyfriend. Parks and her boyfriend lived in apartment 8 at the Victory Hotel. The boyfriend suffered from a 3 inch laceration to his lower left leg. It was noted that the laceration was very close to the bone.

The boyfriend said he received the wound while he was laying on the bed. The couple had been arguing when it suddenly turned violent. Parks then approached the bed and the male raised his feet, which is when the injury apparently occurred. He was transported to Kosciusko Community Hospital for his injury.

Neighbors at the Victory hotel advised they heard the couple arguing. They specifically heard the male yell, “Oh my God, look what you did to me. You hurt me bad.” The neighbors then witnessed Parks leave the building and the male asked them for help.

Parks was booked into the Kosciusko County Jail on April 28. She is being held on a $11,000 bond.

Phillips Sentenced To Nine Years For Home Invasion

Daricus Phillips

WARSAW — A Warsaw man received a sentence of nine years at the Indiana Department of Corrections for breaking into a home last year.

Daricus Phillips, Warsaw, received a sentence today, May 8, for counts of burglary and robbery resulting in serious bodily injury, both level 2 felonies. Per the plea agreement, counts of theft and robbery resulting in bodily injury were dropped.

Phillips was sentenced to 9 years at the Indiana Department of Corrections for each count. The sentences are to be served concurrently.

Phillips’ charges stem from a home invasion that took place last November.

According to police documents, Monday Nov. 7, 2016, Warsaw Police responded to Oak Brooke Place on the east side of Warsaw for a home invasion that had just taken place.

The homeowner told police that her neighbor, Phillips, knocked on her door asking if her nephew was there, to which she replied that he was not. A few moments later, Phillips again knocked on the door and when the homeowner answered, Phillips and Jwain Sullivan forced their way into the residence asking again for her nephew and asking where the money was.

After responding that there was no money, Sullivan struck the homeowner in the face with an crowbar wrapped in a towel. The homeowner and the intruders argued and woke the homeowner’s fiancé who confronted the intruders and he was also struck in the face with the crowbar in the towel. The intruders eventually fled after taking a Playstation 4, a cell phone, cash and some marijuana.

Police searched the area and found Phillips and his girlfriend, Taylor Brandon, at a nearby gas station and took them into custody and interviewed them. A consensual search of cell phones found messages of drug activity between the homeowner’s nephew and the suspects.

During the sentencing, Phillips’ lawyer John Barrett mentioned Phillips used to play football for Warsaw Community High School and had done well in school. “Something happened between graduation and today,” said Barrett.

Barrett indicated Phillips addiction to marijuana had played a huge part in Phillips poor choices. “He got so hooked on marijuana that it became the driving force in his life.”

Phillips declined to comment during the sentencing.

Judge Michael Reed commented on the fact that Phillips has committed violent crimes at such a young age. “Even though you’re 21, it’s a mess… You’ve broken into homes, violated the sanctity of that.”

Phillips received 51 days of jail time credit for time already served.

Warsaw Couple Arrested For Neglect Of Their Two Children

WARSAW — A Warsaw couple was arrested after they falsely claimed their home had been burglarized. Both adults were under the influence of drugs while their two small children were in the home.

Amy Savant, 23, and Toran Lee Savant, 31, 888 Oak Brook Place, Warsaw, are both being charged with neglect of a dependent, a level 6 felony.

On May 1, central dispatch requested officer’s presence at the residence at Oak Brook Place, Warsaw in regards to a possible burglary. Amy advised dispatch that someone had broken into the residence and they were trapped inside because the door was damaged. A baby could be heard screaming in the background of the call.

Upon arrival to the residence, Toran was standing outside with multiple knives. Officers observed that he was extremely fidgety and was sweating. He was unable to give a coherent statement about the burglary. He did say that someone broke into his residence and wrote “HIV” on the television. Officers were not able to locate any writing on the television.

Two children were in the residence during the incident. One child was strapped into a car seat on the couch and the other was sleeping on a recliner.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, Toran admitted that he was the one who broke the door. Toran walked aimlessly around the residence while officers attempted to speak with him. At one point he stated, “Maybe we should have thought this through more before we called you guys.” Toran initially denied using any illegal drugs.

The officers then spoke with Amy. The affidavit of probable cause quoted Amy as saying things such as, “I know this doesn’t make sense,” and “I know we seem crazy.” She admitted that she and Toran had dropped the children off with relatives so they could withdraw from opiates. She further told officers that they had smoked methamphetamine on April 29 or April 30 because they were sick from the opiate withdrawal.

According to Amy, she picked her children up from family members on April 29 but denied smoking at the Oak Brook Place residence. Amy admitted the things the couple thought they observed weren’t real and they were under the influence of drugs.

The officers then spoke with Toran again. This time he also admitted to smoking methamphetamine. He explained that they had been trying to quit using opiates and were feeling sick so they began smoking methamphetamine.

Both were booked into the Kosciusko County Jail on May 1 and have since been released on bond.
