Donald Craig Nelson

WARSAW — A Warsaw man was arrested during a traffic stop after meth and other drugs were discovered in the vehicle.

Donald Craig Nelson, 36, 517 W. Pike Street, Warsaw, has been charged with dealing methamphetamine, a level 4 felony, possession of methamphetamine and possession of a narcotic drug, level 6 felonies, and possession of paraphernalia, a class C misdemeanor.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, on April 26 an officer with the Warsaw Police Department observed a pickup truck exceeding the posted speed limit and conducted a traffic stop.

The affidavit states the officer identified Nelson and that he appeared very nervous and was visibly shaking. The officer used his canine partner to conduct an outer air search of the vehicle. The dog alerted to the odor of drugs.

The officer searched the vehicle and found digital scales, cellophane wrapper that contained 16 white pills later identified as methadone, a plastic bag containing a white powdery substance that field tested positive for 3.5 grams of meth and $400 cash.  Under the driver seat the officer found a vanity mirror that contained a white residue, and near the console a ZTE cell phone. Several plastic baggies were also found.

According to the affidavit, officers searched Nelson and found a glass smoking device.

Nelson was booked into the Kosciusko County Jail on $10,250 surety and cash bond.

WARSAW — A Warsaw man was arrested last night after allegedly shooting a firearm at a vehicle.

Aaron Michael Phillips

Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Deputies responded last evening at approximately 8:47 p.m. to a 911 call and text related to a possible shooting incident at the location of 1544 West CR 400N, Warsaw.  Officers arrived, and met with the homeowner, Aaron Michael Phillips, 35, along with two juveniles from inside the residence.  During the initial investigation, deputies were also summoned to the parking lot directly in front of the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department.

There, officers located a white, Ford F-150 pickup truck, driven by Rodney I. Fuller, Jr., 50, Nappanee, and a passenger, Rhonda Pearl Harrington, 34, Nappanee.  Harrington was found to have injuries from broken glass in her eye, and was transported to the Kosciusko Community Hospital for treatment.

Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Detectives stated that as they obtained search warrants for the pickup truck, as well as for the residence of Phillips.  Officers stated that various witness statements, along with evidence that was secured, subsequently led detectives to arrest and preliminarily charge Phillips with felony criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon.  Phillips is currently being held in the Kosciusko County Jail on a $5,250 bond.

Investigators believe that during the course of the evening, a verbal argument ensued to a point that Harrington had contacted  Fuller to come to the CR 400N residence to assist her with leaving.  As Harrington was inside Fuller’s vehicle preparing to leave, Phillips allegedly fired two shots from a handgun, into an unknown direction.  As the pickup truck began to pull-away, Phillips then discharged the weapon again, but this time firing at the vehicle and striking the passenger front window causing it to shatter.

The Kosciusko County Prosecutor’s Office advises that the defendant’s charge is merely an accusation and that the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Chad Michael King

ELKHART COUNTY — A Warsaw man was arrested by the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department on a child solicitation charge after he thought he was communicating with a 14-year-old girl and driving to Elkhart to have sex with her. An Elkhart County sheriff’s detective was posing as the 14-year-old girl.

Chad Michael King, 44, 519 W. Winona Ave., Apt. 2, Warsaw, was arrested Friday, May 5, on a charge of child solicitation. A notation on the charge states he has a prior charge for this violation.

He is to appear for an initial hearing at 1 p.m. today, May 11, in the courtroom of the Elkhart County Correctional Complex. He remains incarcerated in the Elkhart County Detention Facility on $50,000 bond.

Events began May 1 when the detective posted a message on a social media site. Shortly after the posting, King began communicating with the detective, who told King she was a 14-year-old female from Elkhart in at least three electronic messages. The conversations continued through May 5.

King allegedly identified himself as 35 years old and engaged the detective with sexually explicit communications. He also agreed to drive to Elkhart May 5 to meet the 14-year-old girl. When he drove to an Elkhart apartment complex, believing it was the address of the girl he had been communicating with, he was immediately taken into custody.

Officers found King’s cellphone in his vehicle, opened to the current message of the conversation he had been sharing with the alleged 14-year-old, telling King the location he was to see her at.

By Public Information Officer 1st Sgt. Chad Hill

Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department

KOSCIUSKO COUNTY — A Nappanee man is in custody on multiple charges after leading Kosciusko Count officers on a pursuit that ended in Whitley County.

Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department detectives have arrested Kimbert Alvin Crafton, 31, Nappanee, after leading officers on a morning pursuit from Kosciusko County into Whitley County.  Crafton was initially being investigated by Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Detectives and Nappanee Police officials for his alleged involvement in a burglary and theft two days ago.  Officers had obtained and executed a search warrant yesterday at his residence which provided them with evidence into his involvement with several thefts.

An off-duty Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Deputy spotted Crafton this morning at approximately 8:22 a.m. at the storage building facility near County Road 750 East and 500 North, just south of the town of North Webster.  As he was approached, Crafton fled in his black, Chevy Silverado pickup truck with a confirmed stolen construction style cargo trailer in tow.  Officers pursued Crafton eastbound into Noble County, and then southbound on State Road 5 into Whitley County.  Officers from various agencies attempted to deploy Stop Stick tire deflation devices at numerous locations in Whitley County as the pursuit traveled on various state and county roadways north of Columbia City.

Crafton’s vehicle struck several of the spike strip devices, which subsequently cause him to stop at the intersection of State Road 205 and Whitley County Road 200 North and surrender to officers without incident.

Crafton is currently being held in the Kosciusko County Jail on a prosecutorial hold as related to the following charges:

  • Resisting/fleeing law enforcement
  • Reckless driving
  • Felony theft
  • Felony Burglary

Crafton is also believed to have stolen an ATV/4-wheeler from the state of Mississippi that detectives have since recovered.  K.C.S.D. officers also believe there may be more stolen items that will be recovered after obtaining a search warrant on the storage building near North Webster.

The Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department was also assisted in the arrest and pursuit of Crafton by officer from the Noble County Sheriff’s Department, Whitley County Sheriff’s Department, Columbia City Police Department, Winona Lake Police Department, Pierceton Police Department, and the Indiana State Police.

The Kosciusko County Prosecutor’s Office advises that the defendant’s charge is merely an accusation and that the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
