BREAKING: Two Semitractors Collide On US 30

30-Lake-City-2WARSAW — Warsaw Police, Warsaw-Wayne Fire Department and Lutheran EMS responded to an accident involving two semitractors on US 30, in front of 3601 Commerce Drive.

It was reported one of the drivers was transferred to Lutheran.

The accident occurred in the eastbound lane.

    Officers with the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department investigated the following accidents:

    8:35 a.m. Thursday Feb 4, East CR 1350N, west of North CR 1000E, Syracuse. Driver: Alexandria N. Wert, 18, West Main Street, Silver Lake. Wert lost control of her vehicle, went off the roadway and hit a row of trees and a telephone box. She was checked by medics but refused medical treatment. Damage up to $5,000.

    7:16 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, East Defreese Road, east of North CR 300E, Milford. Driver: Terry J. Richards, 55, East Wesley Lane, North Webster. Richards’ vehicle slid off the road due to the ice, hitting several fence posts. Damage up to $2,500.

    6:50 a.m. Thursday Feb. 4, South SR 15 and West CR 125S, Warsaw. Driver: Michael S. Doub, 56, South Jefferson Street, Silver Lake. Doub’s vehicle began to slide, went off the roadway and overturned. Damage up to $10,000.

    6:40 a.m. Wednesday Feb. 3, West Old Road 30, west of North Pearl Street, Etna Green. Driver: Tanner D. Miller, 20, Legend Drive, Bourbon. Miller fell asleep while driving, causing his vehicle to go off the road hitting a landscaping wall and bushes. Damage up to $5,000.

    Officers with the Warsaw Police Department investigated the following accident:

    3:35 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, Lake City Highway, west of Commerce Drive, Warsaw. Drivers: Donald R. Westwater, 55, Larch Lane, Fort Wayne, and Roger A. Murphy, 65, Baker Street, Plymouth. Westwater’s semitractor struck the back of the Murphy semitractor. Murphy complained of back and neck pain and was taken to Kosciusko Community Hospital. Damage up to $25,000.

    This week’s crime of the week comes from the files of the Winona Lake Police Department.The Winona Lake Police Department would like the community’s assistance in identifying a female suspect. On Dec. 7, 2015, the female pictured below approached a residence in Winona Lake.

    She looked in several windows before opening the front door. Once the door was open and she realized somebody was present inside the residence. The female fled the area in a newer, silver, four-door sedan. Surveillance footage from the home captured several images of the female and the vehicle.

    The female has blondish-brown hair, and was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt with the words “Lake Girl” across the front. She also is wearing green wind pants and white tennis shoes.

    11:02 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, North SR 13 north of East CR 400N, Pierceton. Driver: Kristopher W. Leasure, 27, West Pike Street, Warsaw. Leasure’s car slid off the road and collided with an embankment. Leasure complained of neck pain and was transported to Kosciusko Community Hospital. Damages up to $5,000.

    10:54 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5, North SR 13 and East Waco Drive, Syracuse. Driver: Benjamin J. Waldbeser, 33, East Bowser Road, Syracuse. Waldbeser’s vehicle began to slid to the right and when he tried to correct it, the vehicle spun out of control and rolled over. Damage up to $25,000.

    3:45 a.m. Friday, Feb. 5, North CR 1100W, west of West CR 450N, Etna Green. Driver: Aaron C. Ramsey, 33, East 350S, Akron. Ramsey observed a deer in the roadway and an eastbound vehicle on CR 450N. He applied the brakes on his vehicle, went through the intersection, lost control of his vehicle and hit trees. Damage up to $5,000.

    4 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, South CR 500W, south of West CR 100S, Warsaw. Driver: Brandon J. Ballard, 18, West CR 700S, Claypool. Ballard lost control of his vehicle, going off the road and overturning in a field. Damage up to $10,000.

    3:18 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, North Syracuse Webster Road west of North cR 700E, North Webster. Driver: Deanna N. Meade, 16, North Lake Street, Syracuse. Meade’s vehicle went off the roadway and she overcorrected, causing it to roll into a nearby field. Meade was treated at the scene for complaints of elbow pain. Damage up to $10,000.

    Officers with the Mentone Police Department investigated the following accident:

    3:50 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5, North Broadway Street north of East Main Street, Mentone. drivers: Leon D. Beery, 61, SR 25, Mentone, and Chris D. Moore, 51, North SR 19, Akron. Beery’s vehicle crossed into the opposite lane and collided head-on with Moore’s vehicle. A passenger in Moore’s vehicle, Jamie Grouch, 12, address not given, complained of elbow pain. Damage up to 10,000.

    Officers with the Syracuse Police Department investigated the following accident:

    6:21 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5, 1101 N. Indiana Ave., Syracuse. Driver: Marcia J. Mitchell, 69, East Chicago Street, Syracuse. Hit parked car. Damage up to $2,500.

    Warsaw

    Officers with the Warsaw Police Department investigated the following accidents:

    7:27 a.m. Monday, Feb. 8, South Union Street and West Prairie Street, Warsaw. Drivers: Madison E. Martz, 17, Apple Court, Winona Lake, and Bill Compton, North Lake Street, Warsaw. Martz proceeded into the intersection and Compton’s oncoming vehicle hit hers. Martz complained of head pain at the scene. Damage up to $2,500.

    3:24 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 7, North Detroit Street and East Fort Wayne Street, Warsaw. Drivers: Benito R. Martinez, 58, EMS D2 Lane, Syracuse, and Sandra L. Denhartog, 79, West Emeline Street, Milford. Martinez’s vehicle hit Denhartog’s vehicle in the intersection. Denhartog was transported to Kosciusko Community Hospital with complaints of hip pain. damage up to $25,000.

    5:49 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5, East Main Street and North Parker Street, Warsaw. Drivers: Sarah L. Reilly, 62, South Whitley Road, South Whitley, and Bryan K. Scutchfield, 41, North Hartzler Street, Warsaw. Scutchfield was stopped at the intersection. As Reilly’s vehicle was approaching, she became distracted and collided with Scutchfield’s vehicle. Damage up to $2,500.

    Mary Jane Rico

    WARSAW — Mary J. Rico, 50, 7534 N. SR 13, North Webster, was sentenced Monday, Feb. 8, after she plead guilty to welfare fraud. She will spend the first year of her sentence on probation, followed by 1 1/2 years in jail. Her jail time will begin Feb. 9, 2017.

    Rico has been ordered to pay $52,891 in restitution to Indiana Department of Workforce Development. The amount includes penalties.

    Kosciusko Circuit Court Judge Pro-tem Duane Huffer stated “what a web we weave, when we deceive,” to Rico before issuing the sentence. Rico apologized to the court for her actions.

    Rico applied for unemployment compensation benefits in Bremen after reporting she had been laid off from her place of employment. Rico began receiving benefits of $390 per week around Jan. 12, 2008.

    On Jan. 31, 2010, Rico reported to the department she had moved to Milford, where she continued to file for and receive benefits sporadically until Oct. 5, 2013.

    Monica Portillo, fraud investigator for the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, inspected payroll records relative to Rico on Dec. 17, 2015. Weekly earnings were noted from four businesses corresponding to the weeks unemployment benefits were received.

    Of the 105 weeks Rico received government assistance, 81 of those weeks Rico was in fact drawing wages from an employer as well.

    Rico amassed a total of $27,670 misappropriated funds.
