A judge ruled that Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 21, will serve his death sentence in Terre Haute, Indiana, during a sentencing hearing Wednesday, June 24.
A federal jury condemned Tsarnaev to death in May for the bombing of the marathon with his brother. Three people were killed and more than 260 were injured when two pressure cooker bombs were detonated near the finish line. He was also convicted of killing a Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer a few days later.
Tsarnaev admitted he and his brother did in fact carry out the attack. He spoke for the first time publicly in two years in the courtroom during the sentencing, apologizing to the victims.
“I am sorry for the lives that I’ve taken, for the suffering that I’ve caused you, for the damage that I’ve done – irreparable damage,” stated Tsarnaev. “I pray for your relief, for your healing.”
Tsarnaev also thanked Allah and his attorneys, asking Allah to have mercy on him, his brother and his family.
Tsarnaev will serve his sentence on death row in Terre Haute.
