A man involved with robbing a Fort Wayne Family Dollar store took a moment to try and help calm a worker who was hyperventilating after she was forced to open the store at gunpoint around 6 a.m. Monday, May 18.
According to the police report, the worker was interrupted while getting ready to open the store at 1515 Goshen Road, Fort Wayne, by two men shaking the door and demanding to be let inside. One had a gun.
The robber without the gun told the worker she would not be hurt, but she fell to the ground and started to hyperventilate. The man then got a chair for her and turned on a fan. The worker told police the other robber pointed the gun at her several times.
The men took diapers and 32 packs of cigarettes, valued over $200. They also took cash from the night deposit bag and opening money for the day. The man with the gun left the store while the other stayed behind to watch the worker go to the back, where she then called police.
The robbers were described as black males wearing black and gray hooded sweatshirts. Both wore masks but only one had on gloves. The worker told police the men seemed to know many details about how the store operated.
It is believed the men responsible for the robbery have also committed seven other similar armed robberies at multiple Family Dollar and Dollar General stores across Fort Wayne since January. In all, they have gotten away with more than $8,000 in cash.
